Immortality

A scary concept. I often wonder what it would be like to live forever, how long would it take to get bored to the point of wanting to kill yourself? Perhaps when humans eventually die off as a species and there's nobody to even interact with, or maybe even much earlier than that...  Would life even be worth living if other people around you weren't able to live on? Seeing your friends die, then your children, grandchildren etc would be incredibly painful and it wouldn't take long before you felt as if everything you did was completely pointless. I guess in the grand scheme of things anything you do is pointless anyway but I'd rather live a life absorbed in the rush of doing something rather than giving up completely.

If this post came off as being gloomy and/or depressing I apologize profusely, it was not my intention; the topic just happened to be on my mind for some reason. The question today for you all is if you were hypothetically given the chance to become immortal, would you? Or is it worse than death? In this scenario you would be not only invincible but also would retain your youthfulness so as to not age physically or develop stuff like Alzheimer's.

  1. Honestly this topic is an amazing one, and in fact I just finished watching an anime that dealt with issues about immortality which I plan to make a post on soon.

Either way I think that if it came with the youthfulness I would definitely choose to be immortal. It may be sad but to live forever you would be able to do and see everything possible! I am at the perfect age to be able to experience everything in the world if only I had the time.

  3. always struggled with this thought. Being alive forever I feel I might go crazy, but then again, maybe that is better than dieing? I'm going to go think now....

  4. I really don't know, when all your family had died, everyone you grew up with was gone, when your start losing your kids I think you might start get a bit sick of living.

You go on Hugh Hefner's twitter, half of his posts are talking about old films, people who he knew from decades ago. You get beyond 80 and I think you are ready to die.

  5. It's an interesting topic. Like, what age would your body stay at? Or would it continue aging?

  7. I often ponder the idea of living forever as well. I don't think I would like it at all. You would grow numb to everything around you and would eventually meet the most horrific end. That being the end of the world. If there is one thing that I do not want to be around for, it's the end of the world.

  8. I would think that if the option was presented, it would be irresponsible not to take it, for all the good that could be done with it. Imagine what you could do with nearly infinite time to advance science/humanitarian work, etc.

That being said, if you are stupid, this may not work out so well.

  9. I think it would depend on if your body remained young and you didn't turn into a grumpy old guy. If you had to have someone do everything for you and couldn't relate to new culture it would be pretty bad, but if you were able to make new friends and such I guess it wouldn't be too bad.

  10. I would, having immortality means you'd be a god among men, (you would eventually master everything) and when the human race is long gone id go explore space or some shit. As for that having all your children die etc etc, id just impregnate so many people and it wouldn't matter as much.

  13. I probably would opt to not become immortal. Unless having the ability to be immortal also gave you the ability to see other universes or dimensions, in that case I would probably choose immortality.

  15. I think immortality is terrible. A better idea, in my opinion, would be to choose when you want to die. So say you get hit by a car, you can choose whether you want to perish or not. Either way, it would be playing with the natural course of life. Great post!

  16. Good to know philosophy blogs are still about!

I think immortality is one of those things that may work if you could occupy yourself indefinitely. Then again I'd get sick of it pretty quick anyway I think.

  17. I would absolutely take the opportunity. I doubt you'd have any trouble learning patience and to adapt over time. Even better, think of the kind of extremely long range, society altering goals you'd be able to set and work through. When time and mortality are not a consideration, there's no limit to what one can do.

  24. I think I wouldn't want to live forever. You would see everyone die and things would go by so fast and then you would be alone. Sounds horrible.
